That's it for this blog - cast. We left Maine and took the scenic route through NH and VT and OMG was it beautiful. Absolutely gorgeous!! Had planned to stay in Burlington, VT but the rooms were either booked, smoking only, or very expensive. So we crossed over Lake Champlaine from VT into NY via ferry and stayed in Plattsburgh, NY. From here we are heading into Montreal and on to North Bay Canada over the next few days. I probably won't blog again til we get back into the US on 6/23 or 6/24.
Thank you all for following this adventure. We are loving it and I enjoy sharing it with you. Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there. :-)
Ship waiting to be inspected by the Coast Guard before entering the harbor.
A finback whale. The 2nd largest mammal in the world, 2nd only to the blue whale. Fin whales are nearly the size of a large airplane. Since we hadn't seen any other whales by the time we saw this one, we followed it around for quite some time. It was such a thrill to see it, not see it as it swam, and then hear it blow and see it again. As we left the harbor Captain Tom said the day before had been his best whale spotting day in 8 years. Even though we had the perfect conditions for spotting whales - mostly clear/little fog, very still waters - this ended up being the only whale we saw on the trip.
Lighthouse purchased by Gary Merrill and Betty Davis. They built the house and lived there for many years. I believe this is the 2nd oldest lighthouse in the USA.
One of the 7 lighthouses we saw on our whale watching journey.
Malcolm in "the pulpit" of the boat. This is where we stayed for most of the trip.
Departing from Long Pier on our way to see the whales!!!
Our whale watch begins.
One of 3 deer who visited our upper level. We saw them the next day on the island across the way from our lower level.
The seagulls were beautiful as they flew overhead.
View of a sailboat from our upper level.
A pod of "rock whales" viewed from our lower level.
Does it get any better than this??? We are so very grateful for this opportunity of a lifetime.
Beautiful......
Sunset from our lower level.
And the final result. Beautiful and delicious.
This is dinner number 2. Another risk - the riskiest of all so far actually.
NEVER tasted better.
At last............
Cooking away. Thank you Owen for the tri-pod. It came in SO handy and worked SO well we are seriously considering getting rid of the other grill we have been using. This one is so much more user friendly. Thank you!!
Our first dinner out on the ledge.
Fire burning in the lower fire pit with a view.
Another pic of the view.
View from the "lower level" of our campsite. We were able to walk down a little path from the "main level" and come out on the edge of a cliff that had 2nd fire pit and a VIEW!!
Here we are....drying our stuff out since we packed it wet in New York. Got set up in very hot, humid weather (my favorite - not!). Nevertheless, we got set up and had time to get back to the camp store by 4:00pm (closing time) to pick out our dinner, get some wood and ice.
